Slab Leaks

View on a leak detectorHow do you know if you have a slab leak? The first sign is a high water bill, if the slab leak is on the hot side of the water system most find that the concrete floor is hot. If you ever walk through the house without shoes and you come across a hot spot on the floor, theres a good chance you may have a slab leak. A slab leak can happen a few different ways, one is when the home is being built the copper pipe is installed under the concrete slab before the concrete is poured. What happens is someone, like the concrete guys will drag their hose over the copper pipe and bend it over, the plumber will come back by and bend it back, the problem is when you bend copper back and forth a few times, you create a weak spot and thats the first place the pipe will leak as it wears thin. If you think you have a slab leak in your home, call today and we will be happy to assist you.

Know if You Have a Slab Leak

water meter dialThe fasted way to see if you have a slab leak is to make sure all the shut off valves are in the off position and no water is running in your home. Now go out to the water meter near the street and remove the cover, you may have to clean out the dirt from the box and expose the sight glass on the meter. As you can see in the picture, watch the small triangle and see if it moves, if it moves you have water leaking in a pipe somewhere in the plumbing system. If you meter does not have the small triangle, you can put a stick lined up with the dial. Come back five to ten minuets later and if the dial moved pass the stick, you may have a slab leak. Those are the two ways to self diagnose if you have a slab leak. Now that you know you have a slab leak, it’s time to find it. You will need to perform a leak detection to find the leak.
