Need to Find a Gas line?
A common reason people want to locate a gas line is to run a new line to things such as BBQs or fire pits. Otherwise, gas line location is used to locate gas leaks. To locate a gas leak, we cap off all the appliances and pump the system with air at about 25 PSI, then we use a spray bottle filled with soapy water and spray each exposed fitting. What happens is, if there's a leak, the soapy water will produce bubbles, making it easier to pinpoint the faulty section of pipe. If the leak is underground, we do the same thing, using the same equipment that we use to find water leaks and listen for the leak. That's about all there is to locating gas leaks. If you have a poly or plastic gas line, it is required that a loose wire is run in the trench with the line. What happens is, the wire is energized in order to trace the line.
